Instructor Feedback
Instructor feedback is even more important in an online learning environment due to the limited modes of communication.
Students need feedback in a timely manner in order to continue to grow in the content. Feedback should be given in the same amount of time that the student was given to complete the assignment.
Feedback should be clear and concise but valuable and informative. In the online learning environment there are many different requirements of the student and the instructor should give feedback in all areas.
It is important that the instructor be just as active of a participant in the discussion boards as he/she expects the students to be.
Grades are a part of feedback and students deserve grades in a fair and timely manner so they can learn from their mistakes and improve upon their work. Without grades the student does not know his/her successes or failures. Students learn from their successes and failures and adapt and change.
In taking online classes have you alwaysgotten timely feedback? How about meaningful feedback?
Ramsden (1992) did work that is based on an Australian study in which learners consistently ranked feedback as the most important issue in teacher quality. In Ramsden’s study, those teachers who gave prompt and meaningful feedback were perceived as better teachers by their students.

I have not always received timely feedback in my online classes and that can be extrememly frustrating. It is most helpful when the instructor posts in the syllabus how long we can expect it to take for him or her to answer of questions.
ReplyDeleteI had the exact same experience over the summer with one of my UWF classes. When I was in college and did my BS face to face you could corner the professor and find out if you were meeting the expectations, communication was forced but still available. With distance learning I think it is even more important since the f2f is not there. Without feedback one is pressed to know if they are meeting instructor expectations. Also, I have an amazing professor this semester that give constant feedback and the learning is enhanced exponentially.
